Originally created and used to Demo Linux Distro’s, these CD’s are now used for many other uses including:

Here are some of my Top Picks for Linux live Distributions. The majority of these distros can also be installed to USB Flash Drives for even quicker boot times and portability.

1. BackTrack – This Distro includes over 300 tools for Troubleshooting,network fortification, security testing and more. This Distro is primarily used for Penetration Testing and there is even a Offensive Security Certified Professional certification based off of this LiveCD

2. Knoppix – One of the first Debian based LiveCD distros and one of the most popular. This LiveCD distribution works great for system restoration and retrieving data from a failed OS.Packages included in the current LiveCD version include:Gimp,OpenOffice and other tools for data recovery and system repair.

3. Puppy Linux – Lightweight and known for its ease of use, this independent Linux LiveCD distro is one to try. Puppy Linux supports being booted by CD as default, but does support USB Booting.

4. Slax - This Linux Live distribution is based on Slackware. Many pre-installed packages are available at boot. Highly customizable, nice interface and GUI with many features.

5. Trinity Rescue Kit – Also known as TRK is a free Live CD Linux distribution based on Mandriva Linux, aimed specifically at offline operations for Windows and Linux systems such as rescue, repair, password resets and disk cloning. From the get go this Distro has built in AV scanning utilizing Clam AV,F-Prot and AVG as well as other Windows password resetting tools.

6. Kubuntu – Derived from Ubuntu, this LiveCD features KDE GUI instead of GNOME. This Distro can work along side Ubuntu by supporting the same repositories. This LiveCD is recommended for its Ease of use and is a smart choice for anyone wishing to ditch Windows for Linux.

7. Kanotix – Kanotix is a rock-solid Linux based on Debian, which contains the newest packages and recognizes more modern hardware than any other operating system in use today.Great for basic Forensics, Windows virus removal and safe surfing from a public location.

8. Damn Small Linux – Also called DSL, this Linux LiveCD distributions was primarily used for booting older hardware such as computers featuring the older Pentium processors like the 486 Architecture. The latest version features a slew of packages including Web browsers,IM clients, file managers and many more. Known for its ease of use installing and running from a USB Drive.

9 . Linux Mint – Focused on Elegance, this distro features A distinct user interface, including a simplified bootloader, desktop layout, theme, and the custom Mint menu.Also includes many administrative tools called Mint Tools that is good with begging users.

10. MEPIS – Based off of the Debian, this distro is recommended simply because it just works. Without any hassles you can easily boot into this LiveCD environment which is a fully featured OS. Mainly used for Desktop and OS replacement.

Below are some of the highlights.

One of the technology issues that stood out the most to me was regarding Net Neutrality. This is something that we can all agree on. Below are excerpts from Obama’s site regarding some of the highlights the Obama campaign will be taking once in office.

A key reason the Internet has been such a success is because it is the most open network in history. It needs to stay that way. Barack Obama strongly supports the principle of network neutrality to preserve the benefits of open competition on the Internet.

Obama also believes in having a widened communications infrastructure.

Barack Obama believes that America should lead the world in broadband penetration and Internet access. As a country, we have ensured that every American has access to telephone service and electricity, regardless of economic status, and Obama will do likewise for broadband Internet access. Obama and Biden believe we can get true broadband to every community in America through a combination of reform of the Universal Service Fund, better use of the nation’s wireless spectrum, promotion of next-generation facilities, technologies and applications, and new tax and loan incentives.

Obama also wants to create an Electronic Health care system eliminating most errors that happen by using paper records.

A key feature of Barack Obama and Joe Biden’s health care plan is the use of health information technology to lower the cost of health care. Most medical records are still stored on paper, which makes them difficult to use to coordinate care, measure quality, or reduce medical errors. Processing paper claims also costs twice as much as processing electronic claims. Barack Obama and Joe Biden will invest $10 billion a year over the next five years to move the U.S. health care system to broad adoption of standards-based electronic health information systems, including electronic health records.

Lastly Obama believes in bringing the Government to the “21st Century”

Barack Obama and Joe Biden will use technology to reform government and improve the exchange of information between the federal government and citizens while ensuring the security of our networks. Obama and Biden believe in the American people and in their intelligence, expertise, and ability and willingness to give and to give back to make government work better. Obama will appoint the nation’s first Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to ensure that our government and all its agencies have the right infrastructure, policies and services for the 21st century. The CTO will ensure the safety of our networks and will lead an inter-agency effort, working with chief technology and chief information officers of each of the federal agencies, to ensure that they use best-in-class technologies and share best practices.

1. When not in use, turn your computer off. May work better for you at night before you goto bed.

2. Enable Power Management on your computer if you prefer not to turn it off. Set to Turn Off Monitor and Hard Disks after a certain amount of time has passed at least.

3. Consider the environment before you print documents. Do you really need a hard copy, or can this document be stored digitally? Even setting your printer to print on both sides will reduce a significant amount of paper.

4. Look at the benefits of using EnergyStar equipment if you are not already doing so. Most later manufactured CRT monitor’s are even EnergyStar certified.

5. Re-use components such as Keyboards and Mice.

6. Donate computer or recycle computer when you plan on not using it anymore or decide to purchase a new one.
